Marketing Habits
When a lot of businesses talk about their “Internet marketing plans,” what they really mean is a list of activities that they have managed to complete from time to time. Perhaps they’ve had some success with them in the past, but most aren’t getting the results they really want. Because of marketing habits they are just going through the motions because they aren’t sure what else to try.
That’s certainly better than doing nothing, of course, but it isn’t enough to really make your marketing plan work. That’s because, as valuable as habits might be, becoming more profitable and efficient should always be your first priority.
When you’re attempting to break out of your shell and try something new, there are two tools that are especially helpful:
1. Lead tracking. The more you know about the ways that new customers are coming into your business and sales pipeline, the more steps you can take to maximize those opportunities.
2. Split testing. You should never assume that any idea or tactic is working as well as it could be. With split testing, you can compare the results of different campaigns, ideas, and messages against one another, improving your whole effort over time.
As convenient as it is to keep your marketing plan static and just “do what you’ve always done,” that’s putting your priorities in the wrong area.
